James Socas is a General Partner and co-manages the firm. James has more than twenty years experience in the software industry and software investing, having served on the global leadership team of Symantec, the global security software leader. Prior to Symantec, James was a managing director at CS First Boston, and Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette, where he advised leading public software companies and executed over $20 billion in M&A transactions and $15 billion in capital raising, and was an entrepreneur at a pen-computing startup and growth stage services company. James also served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee and ran for public office. His commentaries and essays have appeared in Investor’s Business Daily, the Los Angeles Times and the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and he has presented before a Congressional Committee on the effects of offshoring and free trade. In addition to his work with Updata, James serves on a number of non-profit boards.
He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the Harvard Business School.
